Did you know that Steve Lack: Audio provides location recording services?

We love getting out of the studio and interacting with our clients face-to-face. In fact, live recording is a lot like sailing—it keeps us sharp—you never know what’s going to happen literally from minute to minute, but whatever it is, it tests your ability to think of every contingency beforehand and have a plan for it, whether it be an equipment failure, a noisy air conditioner, or that one audience member coughing non-stop who probably just gave you COVID.

Last month, we did a live podcast recording for the Washington AI Network, gathering leaders in technology, government, industry, and policy to educate and facilitate progress on AI. Tammy Haddad, founder and host of the WAIN podcast conducted an interview with her guest and had an in-person audience of about 50 people participating. Midway through the recording, a second surprise guest was called up from the audience to join the panel.

I’ve been upgrading our kit, and this was a great opportunity to put some of the new gear through its paces. We had mic’d up the first guest and host with our new Sennheiser wireless transmitters running into our 6-channel portable recorder, using Countryman B3 lavs. We also had two Sennheiser 416s pointed at the panel and a separate mic for audience questions—and, as it turned out, for our surprise second guest. You can listen to the show and see some pictures here.

I have learned from years of experience that if you don’t have two complete copies of everything, then you don’t have anything, I also ran two separate mics in the room but aimed at the panel of speakers to a very cool little device I picked up at Podcast Movement last August, the PodMobile DSP from AudioSigma. This portable interface allows you to record directly on a phone or tablet, and I used that as a backup to our main recorder.

The event went off without a hitch, and within 24 hours, we had the podcast edited, mixed, and uploaded. Thanks to the Washington AI Network for trusting Steve Lack: AUDIO with their thought-provoking podcast.

If you need live event recording or a tape sync for guests on your podcast, give us a holler and we’ll be on the scene!
